Funded by a generous U.S. Department of State grant, Opportunity Funds (OF) students Absar Ahmad and Parkha Shoukat got a chance to attend the three-week EducationUSA Academy program at Boston University. From July 1 to 19, they gained an insider’s perspective on higher education in America and got a glimpse of U.S classroom and campus life.

The Academy, a pre-college academic enrichment program for international high school students, offers specialized college preparatory content, college-level writing workshops, campus visits, and cultural activities. This exposure is especially beneficial for highly qualified OF students who have limited financial means to even apply to college but are strong contenders for full financial aid from U.S. institutions.

“It was truly a privilege to attend the enriching summer program at Boston University. I returned with a deeper understanding of the expectations and requirements for successful admission to American colleges.

For me, the program’s comprehensive lectures on academic rigor and standards were particularly enlightening. They demystified the intricacies of the U.S. education system and offered practical guidance on navigating coursework,research, and extracurricular activities. The lectures on innovation and entrepreneurship were a definite highlight.
Beyond academics, the cultural immersion aspect was life changing. We explored Boston’s famous places as well as other universities, such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard. At the Boston Public Library, as I wandered through its hallowed halls, I was struck by the vast volume of knowledge contained within this structure.It was a reminder of the power of education to transform lives and communities. This experience, coupled with the academic rigor of the program, has solidified my aspiration to pursue higher education in the United States.
I am so grateful to EducationUSA and the United States Embassy in Pakistan. This experience will serve as a cornerstone for my future academic and professional endeavors.”

“Arriving in Boston for summer school felt like opening the door to a world of endless possibilities. This opportunity has broadened my horizons like no other and given me a deeper appreciation of the American education system.

Academically, I grew a great deal during these weeks. The courses were challenging but the professors were always willing to provide guidance. The diverse classroom environment allowed for rich discussions and a multitude of perspectives.
In U.S. universities, the emphasis on interdisciplinary studies and the flexibility to explore various academic interests is just incredible. The insight I gained about campus life and culture is my biggest takeaway. The variety of extracurricular activities available is astounding, with something for everyone.

I’ll never forget the Boston Harbor Cruise. Sailing through the harbor, I was captivated by the stunning views of the cityskyline and historic landmarks. The cruise provided a unique perspective on Boston’s rich maritime history and its significance as a major port city. It was a perfect blend of education and leisure.
