One Year On: Humphrey Fellow Advances Anti-Trafficking Efforts in Punjab

This quarter marks one year since the establishment of the Anti-Human Trafficking Cell (AHTC) in Mandi Bahauddin, an initiative led by Humphrey fellow Wasim Riaz who is a senior superintendent in Punjab Police.

Since its launch in December 2024, AHTC has focused on coordinated law enforcement and victim support. Its collaborative approach has helped identify, rescue, and assist victims while dismantling trafficking networks and supporting vulnerable populations.

Based on its success, the provincial government has committed to replicating the AHTC model in districts across Punjab – a step toward establishing a province-wide strategy against human trafficking that combines enforcement, rehabilitation, and prevention.

AHTC’s ongoing work includes strengthening data-driven monitoring, expanding partnerships with civil society and government agencies, and enhancing victim protection mechanisms.
